Commitment is an odd thing, when we start out in any endeavour we think we will always remain true to our word. However how do we know where we will be in ten years’ time or even three issues into a new series? What I love about D4VE is the creator’s commitment to the principles they laid down in in the first issue, most notably the language used by the new “Earthlings”.
The number integration into the spoken alphabet may seem like a simple thing to continue but when reading you sometimes forget how easy it must be to drop a number here and there. It’s this kind of commitment to the story that helps to engage the audience and keep them wrapped up within the experience. The rest of the dialogue within the series feels fresh and authentic, using words which to us mean one thing but to a robot it seems like a logical expression in their chosen context. English is a wonderful language in some ways as it has the ability to evolve. Unlike Greek or Latin or Mandarin, English is not governed by stringent rules and so it grows with its user base in a way other languages can sometimes fail to do. Writer Ryan Ferrier seems to have taken this on-board and crafted the dialogue to suit the evolution of English in a new robotic world. The other form of commitment I eluded to at the start of the review concerns the more human bond of a relationship or in D4VE’s case the Robotic bond of matrimony. The last issue left us with the truth of an alien invasion proving our midlife crisis ridden “Hero” was right. Yet this issue still starts with his wife deciding whether to terminate their relationship. It’s a nice way of humanising the relationship as we know D4VE to be in the right but that does mean he has not been any less of a dick to his wife in the past. Again the spectre of commitment raises its head and as the Robots are about to find out sometimes moving onto a new phase in your phase in your life can be dangerous. The unravelling story of D4VE is proving to be a real treat. The tension interlaced with the charcetr interactions have so far made this a stellar series and issue 3 does not let the side down. If you do not have Comixology on your internet device D4VE may be the reason to download it. |
