When we first catch a glimpse of Black Widow there is something off about her, it’s the hair her usual red locks have disappeared and been replaced by a shorter black style. You could be forgiven for thinking this is a new image for our assassin come avenger as this is a “All New Marvel Now” but thankfully Marvel have not gone the DC route and reinvented their characters instead they have just instigated a new jumping on point for readers. The whole Marvel now thing is an interesting idea and something we will look at later but for now back to the Widow.

I love the introduction of this issue as we are fed the history a rather fetched story about the origins of Natasha Romanov. Her story is all in aid of winning over a target in the hopes of taking them out of their current predicament. The visual story you are told steals the show in this section as we are treated to a smorgasbord of panel design and art. Phil Noto creates a sumptuous visual tone throughout the issue, the rather soft art works to give the story a classic feel but when the worm turns he is able to pull out fluid action sequences.

The title for the story is Raison D’être (reason for existence) and Black Widow has something of a conflict when it comes to her role in the world. Known as a master assassin she is adept at killing but her past indiscretions haunt her. She now spends her time taking targets down but using the funds to help others. It’s an odd way to try to atone and you get the sense that Natasha is now living her life to try to do “good”. I’m really interested in how Nathan Edmondson is going to balance out her role as a hired killer with her desire to atone, it’s also going to interesting to delve deeper into the characters thought process about her chosen career.

This issue opens up a lot of question about the character and hopefully as the series continues we will begin to get some answers. The good thing is this issue has enough content to draw readers in, Natasha is intriguing and the art by Phil Noto is great. All this leads me to the conclusion that I will be back for Issue 2.

Issue Rating 4/5
