Review - Black Science #4

Review by Paul Fiander
  • Story By: Rick Remender
  • Art By: Matteo Scalera

  • Cover By: Andrew Robinson

Black Science has been a marvel to many since its introduction to the Image line. The concept is a new twist on the Lost in Space principle and the art has been stunning.

The creative team on this book have done an amazing job in crafting worlds that feel both Alien and relatable. From marshes filled with frogmen to First World War trenches filled with modern weaponry each planet has shown its fair share of dangers. However it’s the quiet moments where Rick Remender is beginning to flex his writing muscles that are giving this book that extra push towards a must own. Admittedly the quiet times of which I speak often contain a fair amount of shouting but there are dysfunctional characters galore in this team of Dimensionauts. Chief among these are Dr Grant McKay but as with the last issue we open up with our intrepid doctor far from health, so the spotlight falls once again on Ward and Kadir.

In the last issue we got a deeper insight in to Ward’s character and his family life, he feels like a protector and will always have McKay’s back in any situation. This kind of BA Baracus role is common in a group dynamic and Remender seems like he is having a lot of fun helping us get to know each character in turn. It speaks volumes that so far each new face has brought something new to the table and helped the story become even more complex.

I was a little worried that every issue would see the team rushing to find the way off of another new world with only seconds left but so far my worries are being continually eroded issue by issue. This is in part to do with the character development but also this issue sees an unexpected change of pace. I think this is the first time in the four when I felt I could take a breath while still reading and still not lose any of the dramatic pull within the pages.

Black Science so far has been the book to draw me into Sci-Fi and is my number one read every week that it comes out. The creative talent do a superlative job every issue and each new read feels like an adventure into the unknown.

Rating; 4.5/5
