Review - Black Science #3

Review by Paul Fiander
  • Story By: Rick Remender
  • Art By: Matteo Scalera
  • Art By: Dean White
  • Cover By: Andrew Robinson

A well created summary can act as a great jumping on point for a comic series. The one created by Rick Remender in Black Science is a good look at the series so far but it unfortunately misses what is drawing me into the black science series.

Although the dimensional jumps are hinted at, they for me represent the main draw into this series. I would have preferred a joint visual and written summary. It sometimes amazes me that comic creators forget it's the combination of the medium that draws us into comics in the first place. If we had a small sample of Matteo Scalera's art with the words included it would serve as a great way to not only remind old readers but also bring new readers in. It's a small moan but I think this could really help entry into comics as a whole and especially a visually stunning series like black science.

This issue has the normal time jumping pattern that we have found in the last two books. However our looks into the past are beginning to get more intriguing. This is centred on Doctor McKay, he is a complex character but his relationship with Kadir is proving to be one of the highlights of the story. Their hate/hate interactions are a showpiece for a poor workplace environment. What will be interesting is to see who they work together in the stressed environment they now find themselves in.

Speaking of environments Scalera's art continues to impress, in a very visceral way. From representative World War One trenches to one of the most brutal scalping’s I've seen this world feels a million miles away from the last one. The colours are duller in the world as a whole but most of all the inhabitants show the real depth of imaginations of the creative team. With an ongoing series like this I’m sure they will be tested as time goes on but I hope they never drop the creations as so far it has offered something narratively and visually arresting with every new issue.
