Review - Black Science #1

Review by Paul Fiander

Straight off the bat I have to admit I enjoy Sci Fi but am not a die-hard fan of the genre. I much prefer fantasy tales and oddly enough science. So this book has one pull for me so I dived into issue one with a slight bit of trepidation as to what I was letting myself in for.

To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement the visual that his you as you open the cover is electrifying and menacing at the same time. If also does a wonderful of setting the mood for the rest of the issue and hopefully the series .

Rick Remender made a bold choice in this story, you are given little backstory instead you are dropped into the heart of the action from the outset. From Eel riding aliens to Frog tongue Laser whips the visuals keep pounding your retinas until you are fully absorbed into the page. Matteo Scalera and Dean White have combined in an extraordinary way creating perhaps the best looking publication this year. The mixture of art, colours and fantastical scenery really make this something to see in print.

I did though really enjoy my time with our narrator for the story Grant McKay, as a dedicated over thinker of every situation I felt I related to his character straight away. I can see why some did not like his self-flagellation but to me it felt like the way a real person would react to the situation he put his crew, family himself into.

As a broad brushstroke this story reminds me of Lost in Space but with a multi-dimension slant. I cannot wait to the worlds the creative team come up with and I am very much on-board for the foreseeable future.
