Review - Bad Ass #1

Review by Paul Fiander
Covers: Bruno Bessadi
Writer: Herik Hanna
Art: Bruno Bessadi

The cover says Suggested for Mature readers and this is something I whole heartedly agree with. This is a book about a Hitman and without a little blood and gore it would feel unauthentic. One other warning for those with phobias of ocular damage you may want to steer clear of this book, because whether it’s a fag end or a coin our Hitman has a thing for stabbing things in people’s eyes.

The story as a whole is being told in the present and the past via flashbacks. These past memories seem to serve the story as a whole but do not really need to be in this issue as they are seemingly slotted in with no real reason except there could be a dead zone in the narrative. In the present our central focus is Dead End a Hitman with panache for violence and in the past we meet Jack a young boy at high school.

In some ways Jack is the more interesting character as he is a bullied child who is not doing well academically or socially in school. We are of course expecting him to grow into Dead End but the pathway that leads him there is something I want to see. The writer could however pull a master stroke and confuse us all but for now I do expect to see Jack become Dead End.

Whereas the past has the narrative the present has the action and as I previously mentioned Dead End is a man who expresses himself with a touch of panache when it comes to violence. There is a huge fight sequence which is fluid and confined to one small room. I love the way the fight plays out and I will not spoil it suffice to say the end of the fight is roasting hot.

I think Bad Ass is defiantly a story that I will keep an eye on. Its dark humour and great fight sequences and fun to see. However if the story is dealt with a bit more subtlety then we really could have a new Anti-Hero on our hands.

If Bad Ass is up your Alley then maybe these will be too.

Miss Fury #8

Although not a villain Miss Fury does her fair share of Carnage making her a worthy shelf buddy for Dead End.

Shaolin Cowboy #2

If its violence you are after then the Monk is man to beat. From chainsaws to bare hands he creates an apocalypse for zombies like no other men in history.
