Review - AXE COP: AMERICAN CHOPPERS #1Review by Paul Fiander

When you read the creator list for this book it tells you pretty much everything you need to know. The list of names read (not in correct order), Pencils, inks and lettering by Ethan Nicolle (age 33), colours by Dirk Eric Schultz (age 31) and Story by Malachai Nicolle (age 10). This about sums up the narrative you about to read, from T-Rex’s to villains dressed as fruit the ability to take this story seriously are about zero. However is this a problem?
I like strong stories that look at deeper issues but there are times when what you really want is something more light hearted. The best thing about the book is that you no idea what is going to happen next. Gone are the usual ways to craft a story, instead we just get a load of ideas crafted into a story. Always expect the unexpected and you will not be disappointed, however I challenge anyone to predict what is going to happen next. Malachai Nicolle certainly has a vivid imagination and it’s great that his brother has allowed him to bring his ideas to life o the pages of a comic. I’m new to this series and truthfully did not realise the writer was five when he began creating the book with his brother. Their work has grown from a web-comic to a published work from Dark Horse; there are toys and even a TV show. Art wise the older Nicolle draws in a very cartoony style, perfectly in keeping with the tone of the story. From rotund Vikingesque heroes to the aforementioned T-Rex complete with the ubiquitous mirrored Sunglasses we so associate with over the top American police shows. It is however the enemies the brothers create that really steal the show, I will not spoil them but they do seem to stretch the imagination more so then any other book out there. I started with a question about whether it mattered that this book was crafted in the obscure, after reading I can say it is not for all but if like me you enjoy the occasional trip into the crazier side of a creators psyche then this should be a book that is on your radar. The fact the writer is a Ten year old just makes this a roller-coaster journey you should not miss. Rating; 4/5You can find out more about AXE COP: AMERICAN CHOPPERS #1 here
