Episode 85; Moon Over Soho: PC Peter Grant, Book 2, Review

11/1/2018

It's been a while but it's time for a review of the second book of the Peter Grant series. This time Peter becomes embroiled in a music related crime with magical overtones.

The mixture of a recognisable world mixed with magic make this a relatable story but one still able to shock with ease.

The team up of Ben Aaronovitch and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is a match made with a type of narrative magic.

Episode 81; The Unexpected Truth About Animals, Review

9/1/2018

Forget what you thought you know as Lucy Cooke becomes a zoological Morpheus and takes us on an unexpected journey through into the world of 13 animals ranging from Penguins to Hippos.

The book does an excellent job in explaining how our beliefs have become established and why they are fundamentally ridiculous. Expect to take a new look at the "sex shy" Panda and the feminist Hyena.

The narration by Lucy Cooke gives the book a perfect finish as she is vibrant and her obvious knowledge flows through her performance.

Episode 75; The Midnight Line, Review

6/12/2017

Jack Reacher is something of a colossus both in a physical sense and as a publishing entity. In 22 books Lee Child has found ways to make his six foot five former MP traverse the United States helping a variety of people. Most importantly each interaction has been created in an organic fashion where you can honestly believe that is something Reacher would do.

Whether you are dropping into Reacher for the first time or are a series vet then this book should cater for you. One of Lee Child's best aspects is his way of catching up new consumers of this stories without alienating or boring the older devotees.

7/11/2017

The Battle of Passchendaele is one of the most infamous events in World War One and in the whole of Human history.

In this insightful book Nick Lloyd does his best to help us to understand not only the battle itself but the wider political context of the events of late July to early  November 1917.

If you are interested in the First World War in any form the this book is a must listen to.

Epsiode 58; La Belle Sauvage: The Book of Dust, Volume 1, Review

3/11/2017

Acting as a prequel to the hugely successful His Dark Materials saga, La Belle Sauvage is a perfect entry point for new listeners. I know this because I am one.

The narrative helps to teach readers old and new about the complex world Pullman has created and hints at the richness that has yet to be discovered.

We follow the tale with its young protagonist Malcolm and his relationship with the baby Lyra.

This is a fantastically well crafted story and the narration by Michael Sheen is a huge dollop of Icing on an already tasty treat.

Episode 54; Ready Player One, Review (with Guest)

25/10/2017

This is a slightly longer review as I invite Alex from the Tangents Entertained Podcast to chat about Ernest Cline's Ready Player One.

RPO is one of those titles that seems to have infested the consciousness of a vast number of people with its references and subject matter. We look at these points as well as talk about the themes of book and the performance of Will Wheaton in what we hope will be an enjoyable format.

As always thank you very much for listening

Episode 52; Secrets of the Human Body, Review

24/10/2017

A journey around the Human body in a slightly more unique way than most of us are used to, is the best way I would describe The Secrets of the Human Body.

With the cutting edge in mind you will not get the basic overview (even though that is still fascinating) of the human body instead the creators look at the cutting edge of science related to biology and bring that into a very palatable format.

The narration and information contained are brilliant and will hopefully leave you wanting more.

Episode 49; Godsgrave, Review

10/10/2017

Mia Corvere is proving to be a captivating leading character. This second book in the Nevernight Chronicles throws as much at her as Jay Kristoff seems to be able to dream up and still she keeps fighting. Unfortunately for our Mia, Mr Kristoff seems to have a vicious streak as he makes the obstacles to her revenge ever higher as the book goes on.

I'm throughly in love with the series and I would feel it remiss not to tell readers to jump onto the first book first a review of which you can find here.

Episode 47; Sleeping Beauties, Review

10/10/2017

A collaboration of King's in Owen and Stephen bring us a modern take on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale. However as you would expect it is not full of knights and castles instead our story is set in the modern world and shines a light on a multitude of characters affected by a rather bizarre situation.

The Sleeping Beauty of the title is no longer one person instead it is the whole of womankind who are brought down by a disease beyond most of our imaginations.

The book is brought to life by Marin Ireland who we hope to hear more from in the future.

Episode 43; Nevernight, Review

22/9/2017

Mia is a young girl of 10 when her life as she knows it is taken away. This leads her into the arms of a mysterious stranger with a cause and ultimately into full time education.

Unfortunately the academic establishment she joins is not a normal school but instead a church dedicated to the training of assassins.

Jay Kristoff creates a rich world that manages to feel both fresh and familiar and populates it with a rich array of characters that test Mia right to the very end.

Episode 35; Science in the Soul: Selected Writings of a Passionate Rationalist, Review

29/8/2017

A collection of 40 works by Richard covering a large scope of his interests is hard to resist and within Science in the Soul that's what we get.

Expertly narrated by the by now familiar narrating couple of Richard Dawkins and Lalla Ward this anthology opens up the world of science in a different way to most books by helping the listener to understand a little bit of the way writers sees the world.

An excellent jumping on point to Dawkins work and a great companion to those already versed in his excellent body of work.

14/8/2017

feels From a point of ignorance having not read the series before or seen the Film Paul dived into the Magnum Opus that is The Dark Tower with its first book The Gunslinger.

With a mix of Fantasy and Western with a plash of sci-fi Stephen King proves he is a master storyteller with this hook of a book. I say "Hook" as there is a meal here but it feels like it is just wetting the appetite for the series to come.

Episode 32; Believe Me: A Memoir of Love, Death and Jazz Chickens, Review

8/8/2017

In terms of comedy few can stand up to the work of Eddie Izzard. In this memoir he brings his personality to the narration of this "Directors Cut" of his book.

Opening up about his life in terms of the loss of his mother at a young age, through school, Dyslexia and of course his sexuality with a level of insight and comedy that are truly infectious.

This has to be one of the best autobiographies I have reviewed and it is certainly worth listening to.

3/8/2017

Continuing on from The Waking Fire Anthony Ryan builds on his already rich world with this second book of the Draconis Memoria series.

With new perils and history coming to the fore the book both captivates and adds layers of complexity to the story that are sure to please.

One note is the change of narrator which did take some adjusting to but in the end Steve West proves to be more than capable of the job of helming this pretty monstrous listen.
