Episode 109; Movie Nights with the Reagans, Review

21/3/2018

Author Mark Weinberg opens the book and makes no apologies for being a fan of the Reagan's. His introduction sets out his stall and lets you into his reason for being creating this insightful look into a complex subject with the use of entertainment.

The rest of the book is narrated by George Newbern who does a great job navigating us through the narrative and keeping the tone on a neutral footing.

An intriguing look into the former President and first Lady.

Episode 87; The Butchering Art, Review

16/1/2018

The Butchering Art: Joseph Lister's Quest to Transform the Grisly World of Victorian Medicine, to give it its full tittle is a look at the life and achievements of Joseph Lister.

At a time when surgery was a gamble thanks to poor hygiene standards Lister transformed the surgical approach from a squalid affair to one that actively promoted the cleanliness we are accustomed to today.

The book itself does a great job in giving Lister context allowing for quite a few anecdotes which help to give the listening experience a greater depth.

Episode 81; The Unexpected Truth About Animals, Review

9/1/2018

Forget what you thought you know as Lucy Cooke becomes a zoological Morpheus and takes us on an unexpected journey through into the world of 13 animals ranging from Penguins to Hippos.

The book does an excellent job in explaining how our beliefs have become established and why they are fundamentally ridiculous. Expect to take a new look at the "sex shy" Panda and the feminist Hyena.

The narration by Lucy Cooke gives the book a perfect finish as she is vibrant and her obvious knowledge flows through her performance.

Episode 76; The Grouchy Historian, Review

6/12/2017

The Grouchy Historian: An Old-Time Lefty Defends Our Constitution Against Right-Wing Hypocrites and Nutjobs
I think by now we all the old adage of "History is a story told by the winners". In many ways this is true however as time has gone on society now has more and more references to fall back on meaning if you look hard enough you can find the "Whole" story.

The Grouchy historian is a book which tries to accomplish this by taking a look at the American constitution and unravel the mystique surrounding the document and its creators.

Ed Asner narrates the book as well as co-writing it with Ed Weinberger. His delivery is engaging and funny when it needs to be with a thick slice of sarcasm thrown in to highlight his point of view.

Episode 75; The Midnight Line, Review

6/12/2017

Jack Reacher is something of a colossus both in a physical sense and as a publishing entity. In 22 books Lee Child has found ways to make his six foot five former MP traverse the United States helping a variety of people. Most importantly each interaction has been created in an organic fashion where you can honestly believe that is something Reacher would do.

Whether you are dropping into Reacher for the first time or are a series vet then this book should cater for you. One of Lee Child's best aspects is his way of catching up new consumers of this stories without alienating or boring the older devotees.

Episode 74; Fever Pitch

6/12/2017

Nick Hornby's classic explores the nature of fandom by looking at his own obsession with "The Arsenal". Part review of almost two decades of sporting obscurity with a pinch of delight at the end mixed with a look into the soul and consciousness of a obsessive.

Although this book focuses on Football and two teams Cambridge United are also in there (Surprisingly) it is an inclusive title for those with a passion that can become all consuming as well as those who are trying to understand this character trait in others.

Unfortuantely the production does have an issue with chapter ordering which takes some of the gloss of this wonderful book.

Episode 73; The Physics of Star Wars: The Science Behind a Galaxy Far, Far Away, Review

1/12/2017

Physics can be a daunting subject, however I have always found a great gateway into a subject into a difficult area is through a medium you enjoy. In The Physics of Star Wars we get a look into the principals of subject as they pertain to the phenomena we find in the Star Wars universe. The fact it's also an audiobook is just the icing on the cake.

Each chapter deals with a specific area such as how are Light-sabres formed and could we make Deathstar?  This allows a drop in type of listening especially handy when relistening.

Episode 72; Mythos, Review

30/11/2017

Stephen Fry presents a new way of looking of the Greek Myths. Told with modern references and language this gateway into the world of Gods and Titans is a book to capture the imagination of young and old.

Fry's narration is filled with his traditional wit and as with the Harry Potter series he does a fantastic job turning his voice to whomever he needs to.

Mythos is certainly a book to love, on the minus side some of the bigger stories like Odysseus and Perseus are not contained within the narrative. Hopefully that means we can expect a second book (this is a hope of mine)

Episode 71; A Life of Crime: Memoirs of a High Court Judge, Review

30/11/2017

A fascinating look into the life and "crimes" (worked upon by The Hon. Sir Harry Ognall. A high court judge who made headlines for fulfilling his duty in one of the most high profile cases in recent British history.

This however only tells part of the story of this rather remarkable person. The book details his life from childhood through the war and school into the world of the Bar (Barrister) and then to the position of a High court Judge.

The cases he worked on are important in their own right but also let you glimpse into the decision making world of an often miss understood profession.

Episode 68; Slab City Blues - The Collected Stories, Review

23/11/2017

Slab City Blues manages to bring the world of the strange into Sci-Fi that I can not help but love. Anthony Ryan has filled his universe with an array of larger than life characters and at the centre is Alex Mcleod. An ex-military man now earning a living on the orbital space station The Slab.

The five stories (one novel and 4 Novellas) see Alex chasing leads and calling in favours however he is a formidable force and his "Demon" status is more than earned by the end of the book.

The narration by Steven Brand fits perfectly with the gritty nature as he breathes life into the characters helping to wrap the project up perfectly.

15/11/2017

Mark Lawrence returns to the world of the Broken Empire with this collection of 14 short stories.

The main focus is Jorg Ancrath and the "Brothers" we met within the series. This allows Mark Lawrence to flesh out the characters he created. As a listener this is a wonderful insight into the thought process behind the players we find within the trilogy.

Narrated by Sean Ohlendorf one of my favourite voices in fantasy.

Epsiode 58; La Belle Sauvage: The Book of Dust, Volume 1, Review

3/11/2017

Acting as a prequel to the hugely successful His Dark Materials saga, La Belle Sauvage is a perfect entry point for new listeners. I know this because I am one.

The narrative helps to teach readers old and new about the complex world Pullman has created and hints at the richness that has yet to be discovered.

We follow the tale with its young protagonist Malcolm and his relationship with the baby Lyra.

This is a fantastically well crafted story and the narration by Michael Sheen is a huge dollop of Icing on an already tasty treat.

This is a slightly longer review as I invite Alex from the Tangents Entertained Podcast to chat about Ernest Cline's Ready Player One.

Episode 49; Godsgrave, Review

10/10/2017

Mia Corvere is proving to be a captivating leading character. This second book in the Nevernight Chronicles throws as much at her as Jay Kristoff seems to be able to dream up and still she keeps fighting. Unfortunately for our Mia, Mr Kristoff seems to have a vicious streak as he makes the obstacles to her revenge ever higher as the book goes on.

I'm throughly in love with the series and I would feel it remiss not to tell readers to jump onto the first book first a review of which you can find here.
