Episode 56; The Tercentennial Baron, Review

31/10/2017

Sometimes a first book can be a little daunting for a new writer but Will Damron has gone from narrating to writing so you would think he could handle the pressure. I'm pleased to say he can as The Tercentennial Baron is a wonderful listen.

Telling the story of a young Scottish boy and his adventures with local legend Damron manages to create a sympathetic lead and embroil him into an intriguing story.

Spanning multiple centuries and locations around Europe this is a tale sure to delight and act as a great catalyst for the future of the series and the writer.

Episode 55; What Happened, Dissection (with Alex)

25/10/2017

We have already covered What Happened on Episode 45 in our normal format. However after suggesting the book to Alex we decided it warranted a look again.

What Happened is a look at the 2016 Presidential race in America, through the eyes of Hillary Rodham Clinton. The book points to flaws in her campaign as well as other factors around the race and really is a compelling listen no matter which side of the political fence you fall.

We hope you enjoy the format change and thanks very much for downloading the episode.

Episode 54; Ready Player One, Review (with Guest)

25/10/2017

This is a slightly longer review as I invite Alex from the Tangents Entertained Podcast to chat about Ernest Cline's Ready Player One.

RPO is one of those titles that seems to have infested the consciousness of a vast number of people with its references and subject matter. We look at these points as well as talk about the themes of book and the performance of Will Wheaton in what we hope will be an enjoyable format.

As always thank you very much for listening

Episode 53; Live Lagom: Balanced Living, the Swedish Way, Review

24/10/2017

The world is full of different customs and ways to live. One of these is Lagom a Swedish way of life described by the author as 'just the right amount'.

Anna Brones goes about giving the listener a course in this system from it's history to the implications for her life and practicals to bring a little bit of Lagom into your life.

It's well narrated by Becky Moult and the book acts as a nice introduction to the subject.

Episode 52; Secrets of the Human Body, Review

24/10/2017

A journey around the Human body in a slightly more unique way than most of us are used to, is the best way I would describe The Secrets of the Human Body.

With the cutting edge in mind you will not get the basic overview (even though that is still fascinating) of the human body instead the creators look at the cutting edge of science related to biology and bring that into a very palatable format.

The narration and information contained are brilliant and will hopefully leave you wanting more.

Episode 51; Unstoppable: My Life So Far, Review

20/10/2017

Maria Sharapova has a story that most would find hard to believe in a Hollywood blockbuster let alone real life. A child prodigy whisked away from her home and Mother to pursue her career in Tennis in a foreign land when most children would more than likely be still playing with toys.

With this as the backdrop Sharapova takes us through the ups and downs of her career including injury and her controversial from Tennis.

Her narration is helps to make this feel heartfelt making it a very strong title to consume.

Episode 49; Godsgrave, Review

10/10/2017

Mia Corvere is proving to be a captivating leading character. This second book in the Nevernight Chronicles throws as much at her as Jay Kristoff seems to be able to dream up and still she keeps fighting. Unfortunately for our Mia, Mr Kristoff seems to have a vicious streak as he makes the obstacles to her revenge ever higher as the book goes on.

I'm throughly in love with the series and I would feel it remiss not to tell readers to jump onto the first book first a review of which you can find here.

Episode 48; Why Dinosaurs Matter, Review

10/10/2017

It's an intriguing question but why do Dinosaurs Matter? Renowned Palaeontologist Kenneth Lacovara does a wonderful job in explaining the why's and wherefore's in a thoroughly entertaining way.

Fully explained and accessible to all this is a dinosaur book that has the ability to rekindle or even start a love for those almost mythical creatures the Dinosaurs.

Narrated with passion by the author.

Episode 47; Sleeping Beauties, Review

10/10/2017

A collaboration of King's in Owen and Stephen bring us a modern take on the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale. However as you would expect it is not full of knights and castles instead our story is set in the modern world and shines a light on a multitude of characters affected by a rather bizarre situation.

The Sleeping Beauty of the title is no longer one person instead it is the whole of womankind who are brought down by a disease beyond most of our imaginations.

The book is brought to life by Marin Ireland who we hope to hear more from in the future.

Episode 46; The Furthest Station, Review

2/10/2017

The Furthest Station: A PC Peter Grant Novella

Our fearless supernatural fighting Policeman is back and this time he''s brought his niece.

Ben Aaronovitch teams up once again with Kobna Holdbrook-Smith to entertain us with tales from from the Folly. This time the story revolves around the Metropolitan line and it si far from a straight route to answer as our masterful creative team delight us with the usual shenanigans of the PC Grant series.

Please be aware this is a Novella so shorter than the normal outings we have seen within the series.

Episode 45; What Happened

2/10/2017

For many the 2016 US election was a shock and after spending nearly 17 hours with one of the candidates it's fair to say this is still the case (at least for me).

After listening to What Happened you feel that Hillary Rodham Clinton is not just a politician but also a Mother, Grandmother, campaigner, Lawyer and of course a politician. All these facets are explored within her book as she opens herself to the listener in what must have been a difficult book to write.

no matter who you voted for I think there is depth within the work that will appeal to all listeners and I highly encourage anyone who can to listen to What Happened.

Episode 44; But Seriously, Review

2/10/2017

Jon McEnroe opens up about his life after his main Tennis career ended. There is still mention of his life on the court but it is mostly to add context to the life after sport of one of the most recognisable sports stars in the world.

It's an open account and McEnroe does not pull any punches on a vast array of topics including the Art World and Television Talk Shows.
