Episode 29; Muhammad Ali: A Tribute to the Greatest, Review

23/7/2017

For amny he was the sportsman of the century. However his is as much for his exploits within the ring as for his activism out of it.

With A tribute to the greatest Ali's biographer Thomas Hauser takes a look at the legend of Muhammad Ali through a series of essays as well as personal recounting of his interactions with Ali and a treasure trove of quotes about the Greatest.

It is however in the final section of the book where Hauser looks into his legacy that Ali left behind that helps to cast a new light on the GOAT, that makes this book a must listen to.

Episode 28; The Dead Zone, Review

21/7/2017

The Dead Zone has had something of a renaissance in recent times. Making this audiobook narrated by James Franco an almost perfectly timed release.

The story has a great protagonist weaving his way through a rather difficult existence while on a collision course with a nasty piece of work.

The review does take a little of the early mystery out of the story but all I will say is this is a book with so much depth it does not even scratch the surface.

Episode 27; Dunkirk: The History Behind the Major Motion Picture, Review

21/7/2017

A perfect companion to Nolan's film as well as a great history book

Released to compliment the Christopher Nolan film Dunkirk, this book helps to tell the story of what was one of the most important events in World War 2. Not only that but we also get interviews with Nolan and his staff on how they went about bringing this epic to the screen.

I have reviewed this book before seeing the film so don't worry there are no film spoilers involved however the event itself is covered throughout.

As a mixture of history and understanding of film production this book is really one to consume as both parts are truly informative.

Episode 26; The Jersey Brothers: A Missing Naval Officer in the Pacific and His Family's Quest to Bring Him Home, Review

18/7/2017

A family story that feels so amazing that you would find a little bit far fetched as a work of fiction.

Sally Mott Freeman delves into her family's role in world War 2 in a bid to explain what happened to her family throughout the traumatic events in the Pacific arena.

The book explores the lives of three brothers but also places them within the larger context of the war, helping to make this an excellent resource as well as a fascinating listen.

Episode 25; Stalingrad, Review

13/7/2017

One of the finest history books I have ever read finally comes to Audiobook. Antony Beevor's work on the horrors of Stalingrad during the Second World War not only show the scope of battles but introduce a human element to proceedings. This mixture helps to create a book that is full of impact without ever needing to dramatise the events it describes.

The narration by Peter Noble is first rate as he gives the book the impact it needs again without ever becoming theatrical in his delivery.

Episode 24; The Rise and Fall of D.O.D.O., Review

10/7/2017

It's a big "IF" but IF time travel was a possibility what would be the logistical issues involved?

This is a question that faces the team of D.O.D.O. a slightly obscure branch of the government and it's very small team of players. This is the start of a story that jumps through time in order to play out a mystery more than 400 years in the making.

Along the way we will meet a vast cast all narrated by the cast listed below, however the POV storytelling means that the story is easy to understand in a narrative sense but more importantly thoroughly engaging.

Episode 23; The Princess Diarist, Review

4/7/2017

Carrie Fisher takes us back to 1977 in this sort of Memoir of the filming of Star Wars. Instead of being a number of anecdotes from the time Fisher looks at who she was in these years thanks to diaries she created at the time and lost until she started writing the book.

With the time we spend with her we will get a glimpse into a complex and enigmatic character filled with hopes, dreams and nerves. However for me the book really comes to life when Fisher talks about her later life in a very candid and self deprecating look into he life of everyone's favourite Space Princess.

Episode 22; The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter, Review

4/7/2017

Filled with famous names from Literary history Theodora Goss has given life to a diverse band of characters for this hopefully opening salvo in an expanded series.

Set in London in the 1800's we follow the exploits of Mary Jekyll and her ever growing club in the pursuit of some rather nasty crimes.

With rich characters and a suspenseful narrative this is a book that should delight on fans of the Victorian era.
