Episode 103; The Mechanic, Review

19/2/2018

The Mechanic The Secret World of the F1 Pitlane, is a look at the inside of F1 from one mechanics perspective. Marc Priestly does a insightful turn letting the listener know the tension you go through during a race when you are not even in the car. This shows the strength of commitment of the players on the largest stage in the motor racing world.

The narration by Priestly is clear and helps to give you an insight into his personality throughout.

Overall a fantastic F1 looking at one of the most topsy turvy times in the sport.

Episode 102; A Short History of Nearly Everything, Review

14/2/2018

The third of a three part upload of books I love for various reasons.

Very simply the book that made me fall in love Audiobooks. Back in the wilds of 2005 I started on my journey of Audiobook love with a fascinating tale of pretty much everything. The structure of the book was a bit of a revelation as it helped to bring complex scientific ideas to more of a lay audience and completed the task with wit and charm.

Although on the older side of some modern scientific ideas this book is still the best gateway drug to the world of Audiobooks and Science out there.

Episode 101; The Crystal Shard, Review

14/2/2018

The second of a three part upload of books I love for various reasons.

The Crystal Shard put me on a path of Fantasy that I have still never shaken and for that I owe RA Salvatore a huge hug. Despite the life of Drizzt Do'Urden being in my life for now three decades it was not until I heard Victor Bevine say his name did I realise I had added an extra I to his name and routinely called him Drizzit. The wonder of Audiobooks.

Overall though this is a fantastic book and still holds up after three decades and that is saying something.

Episode 100; The Twits, Review

14/2/2018

The first of a three part upload of books I love for various reasons.

The first is The Twits, a book which helped me to develop a love for reading. The language use by Rolad Dahl is second to none in children's fiction and even today I still love the way he wrangles words.

The narration by Richard Ayoade does justice to the story and even helps expand on the experience making this book a wonderful listeners young and old.

Episode 99; The Stowaway, Review

9/2/2018

A Young Man's Extraordinary Adventure to Antarctica.

With a large slice of Romance for adventure Laurie Gwen Sharpio writes about a boy with a dream of explore the continent of Antarctica and actually finds himself on a Polar expedition. It may seem fanciful but in 1929 young Billy Gawronski made himself famous by hitching a lift on a boat bound for the coldest pl;ace on earth.

The book looks at Billy and his family in the context of the adventure as well as his young and later life. Most of the running time is given over to his polar expedition but the social framing of his life is important to the overall feel of the book.

Episode 98; Star Trek: Discovery: Desperate Hours, Review

6/2/2018

Star Trek Discovery has made rather a big impact on the Tangents Entertained crew myself included. (you can follow this link to listen to our Podcasts covering the Netflix show) So when I saw that a book tie in was released I had to jump on the chance to review it. Thankfully I was not disappointed.

David Mack has done a strong job capturing the characters of the series and Susan Eisenberg gives them unique voices as they explore themselves and a planetary issue that threatens the federation.

Episode 97; Anatomy of a Scandal, Review

3/2/2018

Sarah Vaughan delves into some of Britain's biggest institutions in including Oxford University, the House of Commons and the Old Bailey to name but a few in order to create a story woven around the actions of a Junior Minister.

Working from multiple points of view voiced by individual narrators  the story increase in depth as it evolves, leaving you questioning certain aspects and how they will play out. The characters are flawed and feel genuine to their impulses no matter how distasteful they may feel.

Episode 96; Brave, Review

2/2/2018

A powerful book narrated by the author Rose McGowan, tells the story of her life and the long list of abuses she has suffered from the hands of various individuals throughout her life.

The amazing part of the book however is how she has survived and is now striving to make changes in the world she inhabits. This constitutes the second part of the book as McGowan sets out her "Manifesto" for change.

This is a powerfully crafted audiobook from the source material to the narration and really is a book you should consume in any format you can.
