Up to this point I have rather enjoyed the adventures of Alison Carter; its light-hearted tone has been almost a palette cleanser for me. This is not a slight as I think it’s good to have a range of titles both individually and in the comic’s world as a whole. The comic is something of a contradiction in some ways and mostly Alison herself.

In terms of visuals Sid Kotian has depicted Alison as a very sexual being. In some ways this is slightly over the top especially with some views that would Michael Bay proud. This is especially true in one scene towards the end of the issue, it’s not uncomfortable but there is rather an odd tone to the visuals. Thankfully though Ali is never depicted as a damsel in distress, she is tough, capable and ballsy. The great thing about this is it goes against most people’s anticipations of what the lead of a book like this would be. It’s still a shame to say that this is true but thankfully there are stories coming out for new readers that can appeal to different demographics.

Now though we get to the final part of the story and have to ask ourselves did J.Michael Straczynski stick the landing? The short of it is yes.

This issue is probably the strongest since the first, the balance of action is great and the comedy comes thick and fast. This is perhaps spearheaded by a scene where Al sees her vision of hell like some kind of 50’s TV show caricature. It really seems to capture the spirit of the character and is another of saying I can be who I want to be. Straczynski does a strong job within the story but some of the dialogue borders on hokey, however I do urge you to continue reading as our writer pulls a rather neat trick to make it seem all okay.

Overall I can recommend Apocalypse with ease; it has a great story that has its tongue squarely set in its cheek. If you go in with this in mind then you will find a great read, it is not going to rewrite the way comic stories are told but I do think there is a place for fun in every medium. I do wonder though if we are going to see Ms Carter or again. If not she left us with a fun ending that out a smile on my face.

Issue Rating; 4/5
