5 Singles and a Trade for September 2nd 2015

By Paul Fiander
A mixture of books this week from a few different publishers including one sneaky release from Marvel Unlimited.

Plutona #1

At about the midway point of this issue I started to question what was happening. A Jeff Lemiere title about superheroes without any superheroes to be seen. Thankfully I have a level of patience and a trust in the author so I finished this first issue and cannot wait for number two. Though I will say this is because of the last 3 pages, at this point the story turns from being a tale about an eclectic mix of school kids to something with darker overtones. Obviously no spoilers but this issue is all about the end (for me at least).

The rest of the story is ambling for the most part as we get to meet a group of five kids each with their own issues. It feels like a put together troupe of wannabes and misfits that really should not be together but seem to always end up in detention on a Saturday morning (sorry for the blatant 80's reference). The genius of Lemiere’s writing is that he hints at the issues that these kids have and makes you want to know more about them.

Then there is the art, Emi Lennox is a newcomer but her art does not show this. The character choices in terms of visuals are spot on and they are all engaging to interact with. The art as yet has not had much action but there are moments of drama that she conveys easily to the reader.

This is a thinker number 1 as I have said but it makes me want to read issue 2 and that is its job done.

This war story has a number of odd twists and turns in its third issue. The familiar pattern of a few pages of historical background fleshing out Amber's story helps give us some idea of the way the war was fought. It’s not all tactics but there are a few ideas and also a bit of conspiracy theory thrown in to keep the tin foil hat brigade happy. If you do read between the lines though you begin to see the reasoning behind why this conflict has occurred and it's something rather unexpected. You get clues about the state of the planet from later discussions as well and that's why I leapt with this idea. Of course I could be wrong.

Art wise we get the usual mix of mechs and snow that we have come to expect but this is the issue where we get to see Skroce dabble with a few other artistic expressions most notable around fire. The cover of the issue demonstrates this perfectly as we see a face ravaged by flames. The mixture of realism and over the top imagination help to give the image a stronger feel and the same can be said for the depictions inside of the issue.

There are some questions in this issue around the idea of terrorism. The way the plot is being played out we see the Canadians as freedom fighters but the US Army see them as hostile terrorists. This kind of distinction is an interesting one and the light that BKV and Skroce shine on it is illuminating without being too bright. This is a good series to jump onto and we hope it continues.

From the first issue we had a great feeling about this series and thankfully it lived up to our hopes. Now the Trade is out and it is easily our pick of the week.
