Electric Eye, Pokémon TCG: XY—BREAKpoint Theme Deck Review
Review by Zach and Paul Fiander
Of the Breakpoint decks I honestly prefer the Wave Slasher variant it just feels more balanced. However that is not to write off Electric Eye thanks mostly to its main character Luxray. The evolved form of Shinx has nice attacks in bite worth 50hp and the main attack Snarl. It’s worth 100hp but it also has a nice twist in the fact that it reduces your opponent's next attack by 20hp. Couple this with the fact that Luxray has 140hp and you have quite a powerful offensive weapon.
The pack does have the dual types that make Wave Slasher such a great choice but the addition of Meowstic, Hypno and Doublade can not really compete with the electric types Zebstrika and Electrivire for guaranteed results. Their extra hit points in both attack and defence help them to create more depth to the pack.
Zach’s ace in the deck is Zebstrika the evolved form of Blitzle although not the strongest has a easy to level up attack as you only require two energy cards, these can be from any type giving you a nice spot of wiggle room. I think a large portion of his love for the Zebra type Pokemon comes from the TV show character Stephan and his appearances in numerous episodes. His main attack is called Crashing Bolt and packs a punch at 50hp but works well when fighting Zebstrika’s weakness opponents (Fighting Types) as you deal an extra 60hp.
For something a little different you can always rely on Purugly, the evolved form of Glameow is pretty strong with 100hp and his main attack though requiring three energies of any type only does 40 guaranteed damage but with the flip of a coin it can be doubled to 80. However there is an ace in the hole because if you do get tails your opponent’s active Pokémon becomes Paralyzed. This outcome can at times be more beneficial as it can allow you to reveal more cards.
In terms of Trainer Cards the Great Ball has been the most effective card we have used. It allows you to look at your top 7 cards and add any 1 Pokemon you find to your hand. You then get to shuffle the rest of your cards back into the deck. On quite a few occasions this has lead to hedging our bets to grab a Luxray and end up with a win. Obviously there is an element of luck but without taking a chance wins can be hard to come by.
